Black Africans brought to America were stripped of freedom, respect and sold as slaves. Slave women subjected to forced sexual intercourse by white males produced a mixed blood, ethnic group of Black Americans, later identified as Negroes. She grew up in the town of Mount Pleasant, where it seemed to her as a child, like the whole long stretch of Highway 17 was lined up with the sweetgrass basket makers’ stands of her grandparents’ friends and family. The South Carolina Lowcountry Spirituals were collected and arranged by Luke Peeples over a period of many years. All are in authentic Gullah dialect.
